All the hidden gems: Beach, jungle, culture, shopping or retreat, here’s where to go in Bali to get the best of what the whole island has to offer

Just Kuta, Seminyak and Ubud? Ok. But you’re missing out if you’re not exploring the WHOLE of Bali. From beaches and jungles to cultural hubs and the best of agritourism and awesome retreats, here’s where to go in Bali to experience the most beautiful and best of Bali, all in one trip.

Experience The Best of Bali

Most people only ever see the South-East of Bali – mainly Denpasar, Kuta and Seminyak in Badung Regency, and then maybe a bit of Ubud in Gianyar. You know, close to the airport. Which locals know is such a big shame. Because it’s the most over-commercialized part of the island. And that’s not really what Bali is about.

Bali is made up of 8 regencies. And naturally divided in half by volcanic mountains and valleys. South Bali is the most developed and commercialized, so you’ll find mainly modernity and lots of crowds there. East Bali has amazing beaches but is largely unexplored by tourists. While the West is given over to a large national park. The North offers some amazing alternatives to the bustle of the South.

And then you’re missing out if you’re not exploring the Central mountain chains – Bali has 3 volcanoes, and you can experience most of them via the little-known regency of Tabanan, the area affectionately known as #TheRealBali.

So we’re taking a much more balanced view of Bali and taking every region into account, to bring you a true look at where to go in Bali to experience the best of everything on the island.

All The Best Places to Go in Bali

Sorted according to region and things to do, see or experience:

Where to Go in Bali for the Beach

No 1: Badung

Even though it’s the most populous and developed, you can’t deny Badung has some amazing beaches. With beach towns Kuta, Canggu, Jimbaran, the Bukit Peninsula and more all so close to each other, it’s still a good beach destination – if a little crowded.

No 2: Buleleng

Excellent for a beach experience, if only as a Northern alternative to the crowds in the South. The best-known is perhaps Lovina Beach, but Eks Beach, Penimbangan and the likes of Gili Putih are all worth checking out.

No 3: Klungkung

Just to the East of Badung, less crowded Klungklung has the features of both Bali mainland and separate island Nusa Lembongan, which has loads of awesome beaches to explore.

Bonus: Karangasem

The far West of Bali deserves a mention because it offers some pebble beaches that are great for diving. A welcome alternative to the usual black sand you’ll find at most Bali beaches.

Where to Go in Bali for Culture

No 1: Gianyar

Although also a bit over-developed and crowded, the area is still a good spot of cultural immersion because of the big selection of palaces, temples, museums and temples in close proximity to Ubud. Note: It has become very popular in recent years, though, and has lost some of its intent and charm.

No 2: Karangasem

In the West of Bali, boasting lots of small villages, some 23 temples and popular attractions, including Bali’s famous Gates of Heaven at Pura Luhur Lempuyang. Also noteworthy is the Samara Living Museum for cultural immersion.

No 3: Bangli

The only land-locked regency in Bali is not usually on a cultural itinerary, but it should be, as this is the home of one of Bali’s quaintest traditional villages, Penglipuran. Along with many other culture-rich spots, including the lake-island temple complex of Pura Ulun.

Bonus: Jembrana

Another unexpected entry, since most of Jembrana is given over to the National Park, and only a small corner is really developed. But the area does a lot to offer cultural immersion through shows, classes and experiences like local music (gamelang) and the regionally unique Makepung Buffalo Races.

Plus: See why it’s worthwhile experiencing at least one Bali jungle village.

Where to Go in Bali for the Jungle

No 1: Buleleng

If it’s the rainforest you’re after, virtually the whole of Buleleng is given over to the West Coast National Park, a forest conservancy featuring countless unique jungle biomes and experiences.

No 2: Gianyar

If you want a safer, more commercial jungle experience, the sanctuaries and waterfall tours around the Ubud area is perhaps a better option, if pricey and a bit more crowded.

No 3: Jembrana and Klungkung (shared)

Each with some measure of traditional jungle experiences, they’re on this list because of the unique mangrove forests you can find here – a very different and more primordial jungle experience.

Bonus: Tabanan

For those who actually know Bali, definitely a more preferred destination for jungles and waterfalls, because there are no crowds. But Tabanan could be featured even on a mainstream jungle experiences list because of its amazing and unique off-road vehicle (ATV and quad bike) jungle tours – there are even adrenaline-fueled jungle motocross events to check out.

No 2: Bangli

A great option for visiting one of the other volcanoes, Mount Batur, which is known to be quite active – it erupted at least once in the last two decades.

No 3: Karangasem

The other of Bali’s active volcanoes, Mount Agung is the highest point on the island, so it’s an experience.

Bonus: Buleleng

Also worth a visit for the isolated crater lakes and temples, especially around secluded peaks like Mount Lesong.

No 2: Gianyar

While maybe losing some charm to commercialization, that means the area now offers good shopping – visit Ubud and Tegallalang Market.

No 3: Buleleng

Again, a slightly less-crowded Northern alternative. Buleleng is perhaps better known for great food shopping experiences. See Anyar Singaraja Market, ABD Foodmart and Banyuasri Market in Singjara. As well as Alcovina Wine & Spirits shop in Lovina.

No 2: Gianyar

Fast becoming a nightlife destination, there are now loads of clubs and bars in Ubud itself. With some family night-time experiences, too, at the Bali Safari & Marine Park.

No 3: Buleleng

Again, a good Northern alternative, you’ll find awesome beach clubs and bars in and around Lovina.

Where to Go in Bali for Nature and Agriculture

No 1: Tabanan

The region made headlines in the 2010s for the landmark move to earmark some 35 000 hectares of land in Tabanan as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This to halt the spread of commercial development that has impacted other regions so badly. And the result is a huge, unspoiled Agrarian experience of endless rice terraces at Jatiluwih using Bali’s famous Subak System (dating back to the 9th century). An upshot of the environmental protection is that practically the whole region has remained largely preserved, leading people to refer to Tabanan as “Bali as it used to be” or #TheRealBali.

No 2: Jembrana and Buleleng (shared)

Again, these two regencies house the famous West Coast National Park, a large jungle conservancy area. Aso worth a look at are a few very nice coffee-producing farms in the area.

No 3: Bangli

Picturesque and worthwhile, if only because it’s so often excluded from commercial itineraries. What land-locked Bangli lacks in beaches, it makes up for in mountain and highlands, including Mount Batur, a GeoPark and Mount Abang, as well as waterfalls, bamboo forests and the unbelievable Green Cliffs of Undisan.

Bonus: Karangasem

Offering awesome hikes of temples and complexes squatting over lakes and bodies of water – see Guungan Hill and Lotus Lagoon – Bangli also has the Anandinii organic farm and, of course, the unique white sand beaches (most Bali’s sand elsewhere is black).

Where to Go in Bali for a Retreat

No 1: Tabanan

With most of the forest and agrarian spaces protected and left untouched, Tabanan is the space where you can still hike to a secluded waterfall and be the only person there. You can visit sites and still see no tour buses, no crowds and not have to pay entry fees. Many of the beaches aren’t even discoverable on Google Maps yet – you have to go there yourself. That’s why we say #TheRealBali offers the Number One in a Bali Retreat.

No 2: Jembrana

Again, being home to the famous West Coast National Park means you can find vast stretches of inhibited land here. Which makes it great for escaping the crowds.

No 3: Bangli

Featuring the famous Penglipuran mountain village, along with a series of forests, waterfalls and parks makes Bangli also a good place for an escape getaway.
